山つばき冬厳しきの地にありて皐月の空に紅(くれない)ささぐ
mountain camellias
in a region with harsh winter
dedicate
their crimson blooms toward
the early summer sky in May

あらがねの土の温みに藪椿おのが季(とき)知りやうやうに咲く
now
the rich soil warming up:
wild camellias
know their season finally comes
and are in full bloom

見あぐれば目前とほくに濛々と迸るごと藤の紫
looking up:
afar… before my eyes
I see
purple wisteria
cascading down in the air

一隅に咲く君子蘭 緋の装束に我が裡映し二十年
clivia nobilis
flowering in a corner
I’ve reflected
my passion in its scarlet
for twenty years

うちなびく草の間ふかく蠢くは何ものぞ沼辺に怯む我は
what does move
in the dense glass fluttering
in the wind?
I’m frightened at it
by the pondside

いね足らぬ朝は明けきて五月雨の滴りを聴く憂ひけふもや
sleepless dawn
and I hear summer rain
drizzling–
today may become
another gloomy day

池の上のワインレッドの睡蓮の葉葉にうかぶる五月(さつき)の憂ひ
melancholy of May…
I leave it on the wine-red
young leaves
of water lilies floating
on a dark pond

漆黒の未知の魔の風入りたるか摩擦に喘ぎ我が身の軋む
a pitch-dark
unknown evil wind must have
entered me
my body creaks
as I gasp at the friction

ひかり澄みゆく月天子 闇まさる小夜のはざまに食はれゆきけり
the moon God
whose light is shining
getting clearer
is being eclipsed
into the darkness of the night

月読の面(も)は縹(はなだ)色にほの光りゆるゆる消ゆる皆既月食
the moon God–
its edge glows faintly
in turquoise
the eclipsed full moon
slowly disappearing
rice paper walls
an open window
bringing a cool air
gliding across your back —
my hand
