Report on the Fifth Lecture on Haiku
On 17 September 2021, Mr. Chen Xiaoou, a haiku poet in Kunming, China gave a lecture on haiku at the Foreign Language Department of Kunming University. Around fifty students attended the lecture with great curiosity. The vice director of the department Mrs. Ma presided at the lecture. “This is the very first lecture on haiku at our university, it’s a great opportunity for our students to learn something about the classic tradition of this Japanese art, ” said Mrs. Ma in her speech. Mr. Chen Xiaoou explained the origin and the evolution of the art of haiku. He then presented some excellent examples by the great poets like Yamazaki Sookan, Bashoo and Kobayashi Issa, followed by some refreshing pieces written by modern poets all over the world, many of which are prize winners of international haiku contests. The lecture lasted for over two and a half hours, and during this time the students were all immersed in the enjoyment of the beauty of this short verse. Before this lecture, what the students would think of, when talking about Japan, is only sushi, kimono and sakura. During the lecture the students’ eyes were wide opened, and after the lecture, their minds! Before this, Mr. Chen Xiaoou had delivered four lectures on the art of haiku to his friends, which were very much enjoyed and welcomed by the attendants. He plans to share his experience and joyfulness with haiku with more and more people in China. Mr. Chen Xiaoou has published his composed haiku 25 times in Japan, the US, UK, Australia and Croatia. One of his pieces was selected as the Haiku of the Week on Japan Society.
