The tanka poems I submitted this month were mainly composed last month. Last month, we had the Bon Festival, the primary event for Japanese Buddhists. Because of this, I think that the following ten tanka poems are more closely related to where I live and my life.

1-

my homeland…

familiar with heaven and earth

I keep walking on

sun rising over the ethereal dark

mountain ridge

2-

with golden hue

morning breeze blows

over the fields

and rice flower spills

white crystal dews

3-

looking

around in all directions…

homeland has

local mountains and the spiritual

Ōu mountain range far away

4-

somewhat afar…

graveyard lined with

gravestones

close and distant relatives

lying in eternal rest

5-

missing one color

of flowers for the departed

when we visit

the family grave on Bon

purple would be fine

6-

dividing

the flowers presented for Bon

into eight bunches

we offer them to the late

relatives’ graves and pray

7-

dragonflies

flying amidst the glittering

stars of dew

after the 20th day Bon

a phone call from you

Two pieces of tanka to ground cherries, 8, 9.

The following two pieces of tanka are about the ground cherry which I saw on the street after the Bon festival. Incidentally, ground cherries are one of the offering ornaments at Buddhist altars during the Bon Festival. This is because they are thought of as lanterns that welcome the souls that return to this world during the Bon Festival and as the place where the souls rest in the ground cherry’s hollows during the Bon Festival.

fog clears…

looking on the path side

I see puffy

ground cherry in vermilion

growing in family

9-

a maverick

standing amid the path…

hey! ground cherry

your hollow may be filled

with my eyes

10-

Princess Kayano

increasing her grace…

spiderworts

dripping crystal drops

on the valley path

※Prince Kayano ( Kayano-Hime) is the goddess of grasses or weeds in Japanese mythology.
