Haiku by Yuko Hirota

          the Earth

          not everyone aware

          of its generosity

                          thinking nothing

                          in the twitter

                          of sparrows

          the Earth

          no living things without enjoying

          its energy

                                     bullfrogs croak

the full moon on the pond

                           undulating

          the Earth

          no lovers with its reflection

          in their eyes

                         fireflies…

                         and zero gravity

                         after an embrace

           the Earth

           no ordinary people

           feeling its rotation

                         autumn skies

                         barely blow

                         my blues away

           Earth’s penumbra

           with Uranus occulted

for the first time in some 400 years

                          blood moon

                          dark water-weeds

                          in rows

Brief Introduction:

I have lived in Osaka since I was born and teach teenagers English at home.

When I was a young girl, I would often tell myself to stop worrying about things like personal relationships, school

performance, and appearances.  I tried to persuade myself that my troubles were trifles, although they were painful enough those days,

since I was as tiny as a dot on the Earth in infinite space.

The Earth is still too enormous for me to write about, so I also wrote about something close to me to mirror it in my small world.
