World Haiku Series 2022: Closing Words by Hidenori Hiruta

Dear Respected Haiku Poets,

Thank you very much for having participated in the World Haiku Series 2022.

The Akita International Haiku Network launched the World Haiku Series 2022, whose theme is “Earth”, on December 24, 2022.

Fortunately, the Network happily ended the Series with great success yesterday, on February 22, 2024, as expected in the beginning.

Closing Words

   We are all human beings.

We are all equal each other.

We all live on the earth.

Do you love the earth?

Why do you think environmental problems happen?

   The earth is our home.

We belong to our home country.

We have our native language.

We have our histories, traditions, and cultures.

Do you love your country?

Why do you think battles or wars happen?

Living creatures are all destined to die someday.

Bashō wrote about a cicada in his haiku in the summer of 1690.

やがて死ぬ

けしきは見えず

蝉の声

Yagate shinu

keshiki wa mie-zu

semi no koe

Shortly dying,

Yet showing no sign of it,

The voice of a cicada

-Translated into English by Toshiharu Oseko

Bashō loved this phrase very much.

I have been travelling on the narrow road to peace.

In reality the goal seems to be too far away for me to reach in my life.

I will some day and somewhere lie motionless, soundless, and breathless.

But I am going on composing haiku with my dream as long as I live.

The final stage

begins on March 1

2024

We sincerely hope that you will appear on stage again.

Respectfully,

Akita International Haiku Network

Hidenori Hiruta

  1. Thank you so much for graciousness as host of this gathering of haiku poets from around this place we call home ❤

  2. Thank you Hidenori Hiruta Sama for another splendid World Haiku Series. It has been a pleasant and amazing haiku journey. I have read such a beautiful series of haiku from so many excellent writers. It was a great honour that I was given the opportunity to join in with my humble knowledge of haiku writing.

I hope that you will continue on this journey and look forward to the next invitation.

    Sincerely,

    Kimberly Olmtak Gomes
