distant mountain

a white hat suspended

high up in the air    

遠くの山

白い帽子が吊るされている

空高く

moon setting

moving over there

for a better view   

月が沈む

向こうに移動

もっと良い眺望を求めて

moonless night

unable to tell apart

walls & windows   

月の見えない夜

区別がつかない

壁と窓

bright shop windows

the pale faces made ruddy

as the people pass    

明るい店の窓

青白い顔が赤らむ

人々が通り過ぎるとき

trees felled

in panic flee from home

the beasts & birds      

木々が倒れた

愕いて住処から逃げる

farm stable

半分解けた水の漏れ口

日江山暮

曲径幽独自芳

此恨向谁诉

in the dusk of a spring day

an orchid is sending forth

a delicate fragrance

in such a quiet and

lonely winding path

that it (the orchid) can

hardly express its regret at

the absence of any human being

who might be there to appreciate

its fragrance

This haiku is based upon a poem by Cao Zu, a Chinese poet of Song Dynasty.

春の夕暮れ

蘭は放っている

繊細な香りを

静かで人里離れた曲がりくねった道で

蘭は残念さを表すことはとてもできない

そこに人間がいないことを

その香りを味わうために
