This month, continuing from last month, I submitted ten pieces of tanka I composed when I visited the former Haseyama Residence in Tashiro, Ugo Town, Akita Prefecture.

rain
falls like a torrent
steep road up
the Nanamagari Pass
to the destination
Note: There are several roads to the Tashiro area, but I took the old Nanamagari Pass. Unfortunately, it rained heavily on the day I composed this tanka.

once over
many passes Nanamagari
a village
Tashiro spreading out
as we go

Haseyama family
having crossed many mountains
to live here
and now left behind
a beautiful house
4

a large split stone
in which God was immanent
is
in the garden with weeds
without wavering
5

does
a silent stone pain for a past
never returning
or does it wait for a time
to come?
6
in northeast mountains…
villages settled by fallen warriors
in old ancient days
have been passed down
for generations

Note:
The former Haseyama Residence also has the Kamaitachi Art Museum, which exhibits the photographs collection of Tatsumi Hijikata, the founder of Butoh, a dance genre. The above photo shows Mr. Hisao Abe, Director General of Kamaitachi Association, a non-profit organization (right when facing), and Mr. Hirosuke Abe, President of Akita Ugo Gogyohka Association (left when facing). They both live in Tashiro, Ugo Town. I heard about the Tashiro area and Tatsumi Hijikata from them.

at a village called Hanganzawa
a fallen warrior
of the injured Genji clan is said
to have settled down.

now, closed …
Takase junior high school
and the school song
being written by Prof. Makoto Ooka
evoke nostalgia in me
Note:
After Tashiro Junior High School and the nearby Sendo and Karuizawa Junior High Schools were integrated to make the new Takase Junior High School (1992), a new school song was composed. The lyrics were written by Prof. Makoto Ooka, and the melody was composed by Mr. Toshi Ichiyanagi. Unfortunately, Takase Junior High School closed on March 31, 2016, due to a decrease in student enrollment. Later, the school song was slightly changed in lyrics by Prof. Ooka and became the school song of Takase Elementary School. The photo shows the lyrics of the school song in a letter from Prof. Makoto Ooka to the requester of the school song when the lyrics were completed. The letter is in possession of Rika Inami now.
