<横手市の羽黒町へ3首/
Three pieces of tanka to Haguro-Cho, Yokote City>
先日、所用で横手市に行きました。その折、かつて横手城下の武家屋敷があった羽黒町を少々散策しました。羽黒町には現在、武家屋敷は現存しておりませんが、横手市と市民の方々のご尽力により、今なお古の風情と面影が保たれています。
The other day, I went to Yokote City on an errand. During my visit, I took a short ramble through Haguro-Cho, where there used to be a samurai residence under Yokote Castle. Although no samurai residences are left in Haguro-Cho now, thanks to the activities of Yokote City and its citizens for preservation, there are still the atmosphere and vestiges of the old days.

塀越しに翼果ひろぐる若もみぢ武家の面影かをる羽黒町
green maple
spreading the samara
over the wall
Haguro-Cho is scented
with Samurai spirit

武士道の清影（さやかげ）しのぶ 紫の苧環（おだまき）一輪涼風にゆる
a purple columbine
swaying with zephyr
reminds
me of the purity of
Bushido spirit

淡紅の薔薇の一ひら一ひらに時のうつりの陰影を見む
one by one
shadows cast by petals
of pink rose
give me faint fragrance
of time-passage

夏きたる老鶯なほも身を潜め青葉繁葉の隙に啼きたり
summer arrives
a bush warbler still hides
singing songs
in the nooks
of green and thriving leaves

わが漫ろ惹くや鶯さえ澄みし啼き声たかく君ともおもふ
a warbler
must attract my rambling
his voice is
high and clear
I think of the bird as you

御旨(みむね)は如何に夢に問ふひたすらに控へ仕ふるは覚束なし
God!
I ask, “What is your will?”
in my dream
it’s unclear and unsettling
just to serve modestly

魔界にていとも無残に条の道ひきちぎられてゴミ収集車
in the Satan world…
a reasonable way
was
cruelly torn up and easily
put in a garbage truck

立葵(たちあおい)くれなゐにほひ懐かしき裏道の途にまばゆくゐたり
impressive and fragrant
crimson hollyhocks
dazzlingly
flourish on the back alley
nostalgic for me

立葵 紅くきやかに咲きにける… 我が裡の闇はらふが如し
hollyhocks
blooming in vivid crimson
as if
to remove the darkness
from my heart
10
立葵つゆのなみだを色に変へ濃きに淡きに路辺に咲きたり
rainy season —
hollyhocks turn tears
into colors
blooming along path sides
in deep or faint hues
