＜Seven pieces of tanka to Mt.Chokai＞

I drove with my family along the Chokai Blue Line from Nikaho City, Akita, to Hokodate (1150 m), the fifth station of Mt. Chokai(2236 m), for autumn viewing. The leaves on the trees were just beginning to turn color.

Unfortunately, it was not a clear day, but slightly cloudy. At Hokodate, there is a trailhead to the summit of Mt. Chokai.  Although I was not equipped with mountaineering, I decided to go a little further from the trailhead. As it popped into my head, I left my family behind and stepped in alone. I composed seven pieces of tanka based on the scenery and the encounter along the way.

紅葉狩りにと、秋田県にかほ市からの鳥海ブルーラインを通り、鳥海山(2236m)の五合目にある鉾立(1150m)まで家族とドライブしてきました。樹々の葉は漸く色づきはじめた頃でした。

生憎、その日は快晴という訳ではなく、やや曇っていました。鉾立には鳥海山山頂までの登山口があります。私は2236mの山の登山をするようなものを身に着けていませんでしたが、登山口から少し先に進んでみようと思い立ちました。ふらりと思い立ったことだったので、家族をおいて一人で足を踏み入れました。今回はその散策で見た景色や出会いから七首詠いました。

紅に染む葉裏の陰に身をおけば山霊われを癒しけるかな

when

I place myself

behind

leaves turning crimson

the mountain spirit heals me

険しきの岩石の道しっかりと足場たしかめ踏み登りけり

making sure of

each firm foothold

I climb up

the mountain’s

steep rocky path

山霊の権化なるかな白髪翁なほ登れやと声を掛けにき

white-haired old man

who may be the spirit

of the mountain

calling out to me

“Climb up higher and higher!”

翳り広ぐる雲はばみ幽かなる象潟の浜 日本海かな

dimly spreading clouds

prevent us from

seeing Kisakata beach

and the Japan Sea

… all are faint

地の連れの声われを留(と)め已む無きの下山なるかな踵を返す

my family

on the lower world

holds me back…

unavoidably descending

I turn on my heels

麗しき鳥海湖やや先あるや予感揺るるも地の愛留む

an expectation…

a little more climbing reaches

graceful Lake Chokai

however, my love for them

makes me go down

かたはらの匂ひ妖しく項垂るは盛り越す鳥海薊はも

wilting flowers

with mysterious air

by me

ah…Chokai thistle

passing blooming peak

ブルーベリー葉の隙わけて実りたり優しさにほふその家の前

blueberries

ripen between leaves

just

in front of the house

with tenderness in the air

黎明の雨は劇(はげ)しく夢は醒む 君の悩みもこの雨流せ

Daybreak…

violent rain interrupts

my dreams

Make this rain also wash

away your worries

独り居の書の遠火影たちまちに解く場違ひの不協和音

light from afar… 

reading in solitude solves

dissonance 

of the wrong place

in a moment
