尽未来 季(とき)や巡らば もみぢ映え空を彩り風にゆるるか

through all eternity…

the season coming around

will autumn leaves 

turn wondrous colors

swaying in breezes?

淡々と巡りの生に燃えつきむ満天星つつじ初雪をおき

dodan azalea

serenely blazing away

leaves covered by

the first snow

in a circulation life

なにものも無く歩くとき耳に入る田居に群がる白鳥の声

rambling on

my path with an empty mind

I hear

swarming swans chirping

in the wintry rice fields

道真中 堂々あるくは白鳥ら何ものも無き我を知るかな

without warning

swans walking grandly

amid the path

Oh, they seem to know

I’m empty

ふうはりと白鳥の羽根 地にあそぶ 冬の寂び野に花咲くごとし

fluffy and fluttery…

swans’ feathers dancing

and flickering

on the grass like flowers

blooming in desolate winter

あはあはと風も遊(す)さぶか時の隙 喜々とし白き羽根とたはむる

in the gaps in time

does even the wind play with

gentleness?

merrily I also enjoy

from white feather to feather

白鳥の真白う羽根をすくひとり ほの優しきを心に仕舞ふ

scooping up

the pure white feathers

of swans

I put faint airy tenderness

into my heart

天の蜜こぼるるばかり…雪ふってなほ美味しとふ馬鞍のりんご

Magura Fuji apple…

like heavenly nectar

spilling out

it’s said to taste

even finer after snowfall

※「馬鞍(まぐら)」は秋田県横手市平鹿町にある地名です。

“Magura” is a place name in Hirakamachi, Yokote City, Akita.

池の水 冬の深みにしづみいり桜枝雪おき自浄に影す

water of a pond…

calm into deep winter

cherry branches

reflecting self-purification

with white snow

逝く人や仏の道に旅立つ日 初雪ふりて道しろうなる

my departed dear…

on the day she leaves

for Buddhahood

first snow falling

her path turning pure white
