Haiku at the 14th HIA Haiku Contest (2012) : the Results

The Haiku International Association(HIA)国際俳句交流協会announced the winning works of the 14th Haiku Contest in the Award Ceremony held on Saturday, November 24th, 2012,  in Tokyo, Japan.

 

Here are the names of haiku poets and their haiku selected as prize winners and honorable mentions (Non-Japanese Section) with their Japanese translations.

  2. You may notice that these translations do not follow the five-seven-five syllable pattern. This is of course because they are translations; however, even in their original Japanese, the 5-7-5 rule is often brushed aside in favor of a better word choice. Furthermore, even when the rule is followed, it applies to onji, which have no real English counterpart, rather than syllables. In recognition of this, many Western haiku poets have given up the syllable rule entirely in order to follow in the footsteps of the Japanese haiku more closely. Nothing is ever simple!
