Let haiku be on the UNESCO list!

 

On November 8, 2015, Mr. Dan Costinaş in Romania, kindly sent me an e-mail as follows.

 

Dear Hidenori-san,

 

I am sure you already know that in Romania Haiku writing is very popular, and there are few hundreds of very good poets with thousands of poems, not all of them published.

Here attached you’ll find my Letter of Support for the initiative of including Haiku on the UNESCO list.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

 

I have the pleasure of sending you the very best wishes from Romania; the thousands beeline-miles between our countries cannot keep me out from saluting the idea of including Haiku on The List of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. On being asked one day what Haiku was, I answered: Poetry engraved on a grain of rice. Nowadays, seeing the real growing of the global interest in haiku in the 21st Century, I consider that Haiku is much more than that, and we (the present generation) have a moral responsibility to make it lasting, and really owe this to the generations of people who will live in the future, all over the world.

 

Don’t forget that the official slogan of UNESCO is Building peace in the minds of men and women. It is already well known that Arts build peace in the minds, Literature builds peace, Poetry builds peace, therefore Haiku can build peace in the minds of men and women, creating emotional connections between people, no matter how far apart they are geographically.

 

I sincerely wish to see soon Haiku on The List of the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Let it be!

Doamnelor şi domnilor,

 

Am plăcerea să vă transmit cele mai bune urări din România; cele câteva mii de kilometri care ne despart, nu mă împiedică să salut ideea de a include Haiku-ul în Lista patrimoniului cultural imaterial al umanității UNESCO. Fiind solicitat odată să dau o definiţie pentru Haiku, am răspuns: Poezie scrisă pe un bob de orez. Constat astăzi, văzând amploarea internaţională a fenomenului Haiku în Secolul XXI, că definiţia mea e puţin depăşită, Haiku-ul reprezintă mult mai mult şi noi (generaţia actuală) avem responsabilitatea morală de a-l perpetua şi chiar datorăm aceasta urmaşilor noştri.

 

Să nu uităm că motto-ul oficial al UNESCO este Să construim pacea în minţile oamenilor. Nu mai este o noutate că Arta construieşte pacea în conştiinţe, Literatura edifică pacea, Poezia la fel, prin urmare şi Haiku-ul poate construi pacea în minţile oamenilor şi realizează legături afective între oameni, indiferent de distanţele geografice care îi despart.

 

Nădăjduiesc sincer că vom vedea curând Haiku-ul pe Lista patrimoniului cultural imaterial al umanității UNESCO. Mult succes!
