beauteous
spring breeze …
New Era, Reiwa
the spirit of peace
rippling around the world
2
even though
thinking of my worry
as a bubble
I should aufheben the flow
to solve the problem

the beginning
of vernal equinox week —
as if caressing you
a weather-beaten skull
I clean a wooden-fish
※

Higan is the equinoctial week in spring and autumn in Japanese.
In this work, it means “Vernal Equinox”.
During Higan, most Japanese Buddhists visit their family grave or offer Shojin vegetable food to their dead family and ancestors.
Wooden-Fish is put before a family’s Buddhist altar and it is said to be made in imitation of a fish. However, I think it looks like a skull.

cedar trees
in shadowy black
stand
in the dappled-snow forest …
do you enter me as pollen?
5
finishing Higan
each leaves for the place
where each chose
… filled with tender heart
of once-in -a-lifetime chance

a spacious
Ōu mountain range —
swans soaring yonder
the journey to return home
with their all spirit
7
swans mirror themselves
in the surface of paddy fields
after snow-melt
eating and preparing
for their return journey
8
a voice falling to me
“Take pictures of swans closer”–
approaching
slowly and silently
I do so gleeflly as the voice
9
perceiving
me, a different species
a pride stops calling
knowing my innocence makes
their whooping more joyfully
10
wishing
for the beautiful sky
for their safety in flying
I leave swans at the paddy fields
… reluctant to part
