sunny spring day

water bugs walking 

on clouds

 

晴れた春の日

水生の昆虫が歩いている

雲の上を

 

storm departing . . .

a slug crawls out from

the broken flower pots

 

嵐が去る…

ナメクジが這い出る

壊れた植木鉢から

 

snapdragons —

hearing the sound of

mother’s sandals

 

キンギョソウ—

母のサンダルの音を聞いている

 

autumn ––

sandpipers chasing waves

back to the sea

 

秋 –

波を追いかけるシギ

海に戻る

 

ice covered snow

a single crow

picks at roadkill

 

氷に覆われた雪

一羽のカラス

道路で自動車にはねられた動物の死体をつつく

 

zen garden . . .

stones so utterly still . . .

the depths of winter

 

禅庭…

まったく静かな石…

冬の深さ

 

gliding gracefully

through the wild grasses

droplets of mist

 

野草を通して優雅に滑っている

霧のしずく

 

whiskers frozen

the old horse

waits by the gate

 

凍結したひげ

古い馬がゲートで待つ

 

from out of

the darkening autumn woods

the last warbler’s song

 

暗くなる秋の森の外側から

最後のウグイスの歌

 

rising up so lightly

snowbird

onto a snowy branch

 

スノーバードがとっても軽く飛び上がっている

雪の枝に

BIOGRAPHY

Joan Iversen Goswell is a haiku poet and artist.

She first discovered haiku many years ago when she came upon the Harold Henderson books.

She decided right there and then that she wanted to write haiku. 

She studied the greats, teaching herself as best she could and has never stopped studying -­– always trying to improve her writing.

She is an ardent admirer of Marlene Mountain and is heavily influenced by her writing.

She has a strong interest in Japanese culture, art and literature. 

She also studies Cha No Yu, Japanese Tea Ceremony. 

She lives on her eighty-two acre farm and is surrounded by nature, which continues to inspire her to write haiku. 

She has been published in Modern Haiku, Frogpond, Woodnotes, Mayfly, Yuki Teiki Haiku Society.
