the smell of mothball
from my rug
寒い夜...
防虫剤の匂い
私の敷物から
quiet evening . . .
the host slides the shoji
to show her roses
静かな夜...
主人が障子をすうっと開ける
彼女のバラを見せる
in the doc’s chamber
a grasshopper slides in
through the sliding door . . .
博士の部屋に
キリギリスが滑り込む
引き戸から...
morning fog . . .
the tea seller lights his stove
while I wait
朝霧...
お茶の売り子がストーブに火をつける
私が待つ間
magic show . . .
the beer bottle becomes
a plastic rose
マジックショー ...
ビール瓶がプラスチック製のバラになる
the light is on
at the front porch . . .

Short bio of Kanchan Chatterjee
Kanchan Chatterjee is a revenue officer in Government of India.
He writes poems especially Japanese style poems, e.g. haiku, tanka and haibun.
He has won several awards for his haiku, tanka and haibun from Japan, USA, Romania, Poland, India etc.
He has been published regularly in various online haiku and other poetry journals e.g. ‘Frogpond’, ‘The Heron’s Nest’, ‘Wales Haiku Journal’, ‘Cattails’, ‘Asahi Haikuist Network’, ‘Mainichi Daily Haiku’, ‘Akitsu Quarterly’, ‘Fox Poetry Box’, ‘A hundred gourds’, ‘Modern Haiku’, ‘Chrysanthemum’, ‘The Haiku Foundation’, ‘Under the Basho’, ‘Presence’, ‘Chrysanthemum’, ‘Walesh haiku journal’ etc.
His haiku appeared regularly in Japan’s official broadcaster NHK’s program ‘Haiku Masters’, where he was selected as ‘Haiku master’ on more than one occasion.
His poems were featured in a few Indian poetry anthologies e.g. ‘Beyond the Fields’ and a few others.
He was a ‘Pushcart Award’ nominee in 2012.
