1.

清風に佐保姫舞ふか蕗のたう雪消の間よりかをりたゆたふ

does Sahohime

dance Spring gracefully

in supple breezes?

the fragrance of butterbur drifts

through the thaws

• Sahohime/ Princess Saho is the spring goddess in Japan.

2.

天地（あめつち）の時のたがひは相対性理論に帰すらしと語りぬ  

we discussed that

the discrepancy in time

between heaven and

earth could be attributed to

the theory of relativity

3.

 不覚にも傷めしを詫び今日にたつ愛車を清め別れを告ぐる  

apologizing for

hurting it carelessly

I clean up

my beloved car today

say goodbye and leave

4.

必需品と入れおきし物片づけつドライブの日々を思ひだしたり   

removing things

I put in it as necessities

reminds me of

the days of driving

in my beloved car

5. 

ゆっくりと我たちあがり雪しろの泥（ひじ）の鏡に姿映しぬ     

gradually

I stand up and reflect

myself in the mirror

of the muddy water

from the melting snow.

日常におどろおどろと非日常が混在し我がこの頃はあり       

with

the normal mixing

and

the dreadful abnormal

I have these days

7.  

雪消水 淵瀬の流れ清（す）みはやめ大海めざす一生（ひとよ）寂静   

the melted snow

cleanses and speeds up

the flow of a river

to the mighty ocean

… a life has passed away

8. 

蝋燭の焔のゆらぎ…訪なふは君の御霊（みたま）か春彼岸入  

flickering candle flame…

is it your spirit

visiting us?

the first day of

the vernal equinox week

9.

御霊かと夜半（よわ）寝ぬる身に降りきたる静寂（しじま）の重み尋常ならず  

your soul?

the depth of silence

descending upon

me asleep…

extraordinary midnight

10.  

こもり沼（ぬ）は雪に閉ざされ行きがたし君もさすらふ名残の魂（たま）か  

still, the secret pond

is closed by snow and

difficult to reach…

a lingering soul drifting away
