森のなか小夜啼鳥(さよなきどり)は鳴き已まず 嬉々とし飛翔する君を見つ
in the forest
nightingale doesn’t stop
singing
seeing you fly happily
in the air
2
順々に巡りくる幸たまふ今日は野にかがよふ五月(さつき)の光
blessing going round
being given us in turn–
today on fields
the sparkling light
of May
3
畦に咲く白詰草は白を詰め風のそよぎのひとときに酔ふ
between paddies…
white clover stuffed fully
with white
one by one rustles
in the breeze
4
濁り田の空の水月ほのゆれて蛙かなづるセレナーデかな
the moon
reflecting in the paddy
sways faintly
frogs playing the serenade
at midnight

おそろしき闇のしづけさのんのんと消えゆきけるや蛙の合唱
darkness
at the terrible night
is disappearing
in great sounds
with frogs’ chorus

馥郁と林苑(もり)に耀ふ針槐 ゼフュロスの気は思ひしづめむ
Locust flowers
shedding sweet fragrance
in the forest shrubs
breath of Zephyros calms
my thoughts

藪越えに靴紐ゆるみほどけたり 結び手かざす五月(さつき)の光
shoelaces
loosened and untied after walking
over the bush–
May- light shines on my hands
while I retie them

真っ直ぐに天に届けよ 豊作の願こめシャベル早苗田にたつ
harvest be good
may our wish reach straight
up to Heaven
a shovel stands in the paddy
after planting rice sprouts

五月雨(さみだれ)のもやりに浮かぶ桐の花かげり淡きにあはれなほます
purple paulownia
floating in the early summer
rainy haze…
faint silhouette
further enhances its grace

亡き義叔母(おば)に頼まれし事果たしにき 寺に菖蒲咲く納骨の日
I fulfilled
what my late aunt-in-law had
commissioned me to do
Iris blooming at the temple
on the day her ashes laid to rest
