HAIKU in the midst of the ravages of the War

On November 19, 2022, from 11:00 pm to 0:00 am, NHK in Japan broadcast “HAIKU in the War” as an ETV special.

In Ukraine and Russia, which are in the midst of war, ordinary people continue to write haiku.

Capturing a moment in everyday life, they write haiku in short words. What was expressed through haiku were the collapsed daily life, death caused by the war near themselves, etc.

In Ukraine and Russia, “The Narrow Road to Oku” by Bashō was translated into Russian during the Soviet era, and Japanese haiku are sometimes taught in schools.

Both countries have earnest haiku enthusiasts.

What do people feel and think in the midst of the war, and how do they live?

We asked haiku poets to talk about their own works remotely, and listened to the “inner voices” of people in the midst of the ravages of the war.

6 Haiku Friends

14 haiku poets, who included 7 Ukrainian poets and 7 Russian ones, appeared and talked about their haiku on the program. Among them, there were 6 haiku poets who participated in the Japan-Russia Haiku Contest (organized by the Akita International Haiku / Senryu / Tanka Network) or the World Haiku Series (hosted by the Akita International Haiku Network).

We would like to introduce only one haiku of theirs.
