Seven pieces of Tanka to Shiratamanoki Wetland>
1-
echoes
of the faraway primordial …
still, now I hear it
Shiratamanoki Wetland
stagnation of chaos
Shiratamanoki Wetland is located in Higashinaruse Village, Ogachi-Gun, Akita Prefecture, within Kurikoma National Park centered on Mt. Kurikoma, which straddles Akita, Iwate, Miyagi, and Yamagata Prefectures. At Shiratamanoki Wetland, we can see the deposited peat since the last glacial period more than 15,000 years ago, making it a valuable site for academic research. It is closed by snow in winter and spring but open in summer and fall. I visited there in the fall with beautiful autumn foliage, when Shiratamanoki / Gaultheria pyroloides, which gave the site name, had fruits, and I composed Tanka.
※Please beware of Bears.
2-
along with
a cluster of white balls…
silver grasses
swaying ethereally and playing
sounds of the forest guardianship.
3-
in the forest…
like sparkling stars
tiny gems
white snowballs shimmer
in the deep green leaves
4-
softly…silently…
through the weeds
I see
snowballs glittering
I smell fairies’ fragrance
5-
stepping firmly
on planks of the wooden path
I take
in a sweeping view
of Shiratamanoki primeval wetland
6-
limpid stream
from Mt. Kurikoma
flows over
a marshy field revealing
algae-deposit
7-
algae in green
stagnating in the virgin wetland
may reflect
many far-off centuries
of time
Three pieces of Tanka to Bears>
Bears are frequently coming down to human settlements in Japan this year. These animals, which are supposed to live in the mountains, are causing significant damage to crops in fields and fruit trees and injuring humans.
The most affected region is Akita Prefecture. As of November 2, 65 people have been injured by bears. The bears attack the heads and faces of humans whenever they see their shadow.
It is said that the leading causes of their attacks are this year’s poor harvest of acorns and beech nuts and the overpopulation of bears.
My area also had a human casualty by a bear, so I composed tanka as a familiar problem.
8-
Bear footprints …
coming down from the mountains
to the human areas
and roaming and running
around about 2.44 miles
9-
rustling sounds…
looking through a break
in a bamboo thicket
we touch a bear’s shadow
at Mt. Taihei
10-
bears coming down
from mountains to cities…
if you recognized
life is short and fleeting
you would not harm people
all beautiful, huge congratulations, Rika !
