On December 23, 2018, Chen-ou Liu presented tanka, haiku, and senryu with his short bio and his recent photo, wishing us all the best in the coming year.

Here is a short bio:

Chen-ou Liu is currently the editor and translator of NeverEnding Story(neverendingstoryhaikutanka.blogspot.com), and the author of two award-winning books, Following the Moon to the Maple Land (First Prize, 2011 Haiku Pix Chapbook Contest) and A Life in Transition and Translation (Honorable Mention, 2014 Turtle Light Press Biennial Haiku Chapbook Competition). His tanka and haiku have been honored with many awards.

And here is a photo of Chen-ou Liu.

Here are 10 pieces of tanka with the Japanese translations by Hidenori Hiruta.

Tanka:

the scent
of rambling roses …
can one wife
and a 9-to-5 job
contain my wildness?

framed butterflies
hang over my niece’s desk
at summer’s end
this flutter of fear
on returning to school

crime scene tape
flapping in the cold wind —
a dog
howls into the night
as if gasping its last breath

alone
on this sultry night
face to face
with an old TV
flickering on and off

a spider
weaving moonlight
through the web —
an unknown bird settles
on the foreclosure sign

the playground
filling with laughter
and gossip …
a pregnant teen waddles
behind her toddler

all that remains
of my fifteen-year
married life:
finger smudges
on a dust-covered box

all night long
the motel’s vacancy sign
blinking on and off …
her absence leaves a hole
in my wandering heart

midnight moon
hanging low in the sky
on the way home
a shadow leads me
into my fortieth year

between us
a wall of pillows
in the dim light
to stay or leave
it’s your life, your choice
