1

after Bon

alarm of a pelting rain

from my smartphone…

I watch leaden sky

and chase clouds

2

summer is over

blown up by August storm

lost in a flash

a wind-bell

…chiming…chiming…

in vain…

3

gorgeously

a gourd has grown up

hanging down

an ordinary mortal

I ask for something good

4

leaking

a faint and feeble sigh

lady bell smiling

moist

with morning dew

5

soon

the best time comes …

summer is over

the ears of rice brightening

with morning dew

6

kudzu field-

my passage blocked

by leaves’ shadow

yonder the cloudy sky

emitting subtle light

7

I can’t

prevent something inner

surging up…

is it my desire

or the Divine’s direction?

8

pink bush clover —

just thinking yourself

worthless

don’t bury yourself

in the midst of kudzu fields

9

you and I

talk together for a while

growing closer

like wild thoroughworts

lost in a reverie

  • About Kudzu, bush clover and thoroughwort, each flower is one of seven autumn flowers, which are kudzu, bush clover, thoroughwort, silvergrass (Japanese pampas grass), fringed pink, golden lace and balloon flower (Chinese bellflower). They are very traditional flowers for Japanese literature, in particular, waka/ tanka and haiku since Manyoshu (the oldest anthology of Japanese poetry).

10

without any trouble
I’ve done what I should do
while resting I hear
a September long rain
to change season to…
