1.

 

 

山越えて訪ふ者のまなかひに爽籟ひかる八塩の水面(みなも)

 

gentle zephyr…

light waves shimmer

on Lake Yashio

spreading before my eyes

reaching over the mountains

 

2.

 

 

爽籟は八塩の湖(うみ)にさざめきて眞日の光を天(あま)にかへさむ

 

gentle breeze

letting Lake Yashio ripple

returns

the divine light

to the welkin

 

3.

 

 

名月や曇りなき夜に皎々と幼なの日たち窓開けはなつ  

 

Harvest moon

shining bright in the clear sky…

as the moon-viewing of

my child days revive

I open wide the windows

 

4.

 

 

名月の御神酒(おみき)たまはり独酌の盃にうかぶる君への想ひ

 

receiving 

the sacred sake for 

the harvest moon…

I float my love for you in

a solitary sake cup

 

5.

 

 

みはるかす天(あま)つ狭霧(さぎり)はまひふりて刈田ひろがる雄勝野となる

 

as far as I can see

the heavenly mist comes in…

Ogachi Field

transforms into a vast expanse of

harvested rice fields

 

6.

 

白々と濃霧にかすむ刈田原 ゆれねぎらふは畦の赤蓼

 

faint, white 

and dense mist veiling

harvested rice fields…

smartweeds on the ridge 

wave to them for thanks

 

7.

 

先のこと未だ見えずも我あゆむ狭霧(さぎり)のなかの車のライト

 

even though

I can’t see the future yet

I keep walking

… lights of a car in the fog

8.

 

寺町を脇目もふらずスタスタとゆく人のあり我はながめて

 

a woman 

walking quickly through 

the temple street

without looking aside…

I look towards her.

 

9.

 

 

うらさぶる墓標に添ふる百回忌法要塔婆しろき風なづ

 

white breezes 

caress the wooden stupa of 

a memorial service for the 100th

standing by 

a lonely deserted grave 

 

10.

 

彼岸あけ供物包みて西向きに線香手向け仏を送る

 

 

at the end 

of equinox week…

we wrap the offerings 

and send off the deceased spirit

westward with incense sticks

 

※ This practice means Western Pure Land.
