Let haiku be on the UNESCO list!

Here is a letter of support of the campaign from Ms.  Jasna Popović Poje, Croatia.

We sincerely wish to appreciate and share it with each other.

Haiku for children, a teacher’s story

My name is Jasna Popović Poje, I’m a teacher at Primary school in the town of Novska, Croatia.  As a little girl I started to write poems on Nature, and even today, I have these first verses.  From early childhood till today, I preferred short form poetry, and today, as a writer for children, I have a large number of haiku and haibun published, as well.

My collections of haiku poetry are about schoolchildren: the first book is about the first graders (“Zubić u jabuci”/A tooth in an Apple) and the second book is about my pupils in fourth grade (“Muha u četvrtom A”/A Fly in the Class 4b).  Besides being attached to my students and their life in school, they are also, my main theme and inspiration.

In the school, I hold a successful literature workshop where we learn how to write haiku, his history and characteristics, what’s important…  We take walks in Nature, draw and write and so we make our haigas, which children create with a great enthusiasm.

Haiku is part of my life and of my pupils’ childhood.
