1.

 

 

おごりたつ荒びの風よ大寒の野に白き渦けむらせにけり

 

haughty,

rough winds swirl up

white snow flakes

on the vague plains

in the coldest season

 

2.

 

 

魔の雪は我が身にふりて凍らせむ魂 (たま) さまよふは色無き原野

 

Devil Snow

falling on my body

and freezing…

my breath wanders

in colourless fields

 

3.

 

 

ともすれば巡りの雪に掻き消ゆる我がともしびの虚無の性(さが)かも

 

in some ways
my inner fire is liable
to have emptiness
to vanish into the snow
following nature’s circle

 

4.

 

 

その先も真白はつづき歩みをり身の丈ほどの雪壁の道

 

beyond that

the white goes on

I walk along

a path with the snow-wall

as tall as I

 

5.

 

 

雪壁を越え一望すは風清(す)みて日輪うすき白銀の野

 

over the snow wall

the whole view spreads…

I breathe in

the silver-white fields with

clear winds and the faint sun

 

6.

 

 

あらびたつ冬の雪原いま凪ぎて青空ふかく光かがやく

 

now

the raging winter snowfield

becoming calm

the blue sky is deep with

shining sunlight

 

7.

 

 

業ふかき野のさ乙女よ自づなれ白銀（しろがね）の野の調べの中で

 

Oh…the girl

Of nature with deep karma!

Be what you are

In the wintry chord of

Shining silver fields

 

8.

 

 

霧氷ふり松のさ枝は微動せず冬のあらびは永遠(とわ)の虚空へと

 

rime alighting…

pine-trees’ branches don’t 
stir slightly 
fierce, and tranquil winter
into the eternal void

 

9.

 

 

ひかりつつ滴る露の氷結す冬のいのちの儚なからずや 

 

sparkling 

dewdrops crystallizing 

winter spirit 

stays for a while 

and isn’t fragile? 

 

10.

 

 

まぼろしも雪の沙上に掻き消えて春まだ遠き凍つる地にあり

 

even reveries

disappear on the snow fields

I’m

in a frozen land

spring is still far away
